Welcome to Year 6 - St John & St Michael
It’s lovely to be back in school and everyone seems to be settling in well. We are really impressed with how well they are coping with all of the handwashing and new procedures that have been put in place to keep everyone safe. Thank you so much for all of your patience and support regarding this.
We have launched straight into our Titanic topic, which the children are really enjoying. We have already written a newspaper report about the maiden voyage and are planning to create an advertisement for the Titanic next.
This term, we will also be revisiting Electricity as our Science topic and will be learning how to use maps in Geography. A big priority has also been wellbeing. For this reason, we have been doing daily PSHE lessons based on the topic of ‘My Mind’. The children have been discussing their experiences of lockdown, as well as strategies to deal with everyday worries. We are also very lucky to be the first year group to be doing Forest School this term. St Michael will be doing this on Monday or Tuesday each week (depending on which group your child is in) and St John will be doing Thursday or Friday. We hope that this will provide your child with lots of valuable skills, which can be applied across the curriculum.
Our PE days will be Wednesday and Friday. Please make sure that your child brings their PE kit in on Monday and takes it home to be washed every Friday. As the weather turns colder, it will be advisable for your child to have tracksuit bottoms and a jumper for outdoor PE.
Homework books and reading books will not be going home at present. We are however reading daily in class and are eagerly awaiting the launch of our Accelerated Reader Programme. Spelling and Maths homework is being set on Spelling Shed every week (set on Fridays). Children are then being tested on spellings on the following Friday. Everyone was given their spelling shed login at the end of the first week. If you do not have access to a computer for your child to do this work, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
If you have any queries regarding your child’s learning or wellbeing, please feel free to contact us using our school emails.
