Intent

At St Mary’s school, we strongly believe all of our children have the right to experience, enjoy and achieve in music.  Children are encouraged to develop a strong awareness, enjoyment and appreciation of music, to gain knowledge of forms and composers across time and place, to experience composing and playing music both alone and as part of a group.

Implementation

We offer a rich and diverse music curriculum delivered by music specialists who teach in every year group. All children will learn to sing, play percussion, play the recorder and the guitar whilst they are with us.  There are also opportunities to take up weekly private instrumental tuition.

We sing weekly in Hymn Practice, as well as enjoying singing rhymes, songs and prayers in a range of different subjects including MFL. Children can become part of one of our wonderful school choirs who take part in our school concerts, as well as travelling out to our local community to sing at supermarkets, nursing homes and church community social clubs. All children participate in musical shows throughout their time with us, which may be, for example, a Christmas production or an end of year event.  All of these events are great opportunities for musical creativity shine.

Impact

Children will gain awareness of the contributions of music to our world: they will develop technical and critical skills that they will be able to use when responding to music. They will experience performing for a purpose in front of an audience, and will also learn how to be an audience.  They will have an exposure to and strong appreciation of musical cultures through the learning connections they have made between music and other subjects. They will have been introduced to the joy and well-being that can come from being immersed in music.

Music Events

Our recorder players went to Christ Church University to play for a group of trainee teachers.  They showed them the huge potential that the recorder has to offer!
