We have recently relaunched our House system to maintain and improve pupils’ attitudes and learning. The system will develop a real sense of identity and belonging, and provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate achievements.
At St Mary’s we want the children to strive to be: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-Minded, Risk-Takers, Caring, Balanced and Reflective. We hope to nurture these attributes in the children throughout their school career.
The House system is linked to our school merit system where children can earn ‘House points’ for demonstrating any of the attributes aforementioned, as well as effort for class work.
We decided to choose three new saints, Oscar Romero, Mother Teresa and St Vincent de Paul, while keeping St Bernadette as the fourth saint.
We wanted to include more modern saints, who had been canonised recently, and St Vincent was added due to the strong links with the local SVP Society.
St Bernadette’s devotion to Our Lady and the Rosary is also very appropriate for our school.
For each House there is now an allocated House Leader; to organise events, oversee behaviour issues, and support staff and Lunchtime supervisors. We will also be appointing Year 6 House Captains, to support the House Leaders.
Each term we are planning House events, which we hope, will be well supported by the children. These events will include for example: sports activities, Maths challenges, quizzes, Art competitions and fund-raising for charities.
We hope the children will enjoy the new improvements!
