The BLOODHOUND SSC engineering adventure provides us with a once in a lifetime opportunity to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
BLOODHOUND SSC is exactly what it says - a SuperSonic Car!
It is supersonic because it is designed to go faster than the speed of sound. It is a still classed as a car because it has four wheels and is under full control of its driver. BLOODHOUND SSC is a jet and rocket powered car designed to go at 1,000 mph. It weighs over 7 tonnes and the engines produce more than 135,000 horsepower - more than 6 times the power of all the Formula 1 cars on a starting grid put together!
The BLOODHOUND SSC project is unique when compared to other ground breaking engineering ventures in that all the information about the research, design, build and testing of the car is available to teachers and students, and of course to anyone that wishes to visit the website. As an ambassador for the project, Mr Bainborough was invited by Bloodhound Education team to take three children from St. Mary’s to The Festival of Speed, held at Goodwood, in West Sussex. The children took part in a competition to design and build a rocket car. The children named their car ‘The Whitstable Rocket’. It came second in their race with a time of 1.832 seconds. The children had an amazing time, one child was quoted as saying it was the best day of his life!
